Southern Maryland Sailing Foundation, Inc.

The Southern Maryland Sailing Foundation, founded in 1999, supports youth and community sailing by providing capital equipment to organized junior instruction, high school racing, and sailing training programs, and special funding for gifted competitive racing sailors.

The foundation seeks continuous contributions to expand and upgrade its fleet of small sailboats, safety and coaching boats, and supporting hardware.

The Foundation grants the use of its boats and equipment to organizations using them to support junior sailing.

Basic Sailing

The Foundation’s boats support on-the- water training in basic sailing courses held every spring and the fall in the Tall Timbers area.

Junior Instruction & Racing

The Sailing Center Chesapeake sponsors junior sailing and racing instruction each summer. Included are week-long summer camps and many junior regattas.

Gifted Sailors

Southern Maryland sailors who have demonstrated high proficiency in sailboat racing can apply to the Foundation for financial assistance on a needs basis to compete in championship events.

High School Racing

The Sailing Center Chesapeake high school program for students interested in competing with other high schools.

This program, open to students throughout the area, is filled by several nearby high schools.

On most Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons during the spring and fall of the school year, these sailors practice at the Sailing Center Chesapeake, Tall Timbers, St. Mary’s County.

The coaching volunteers support the practices and weekend varsity competitive regattas against other high schools in the Central League of the Middle Atlantic Scholastic Sailing Association, a district of the Interscholastic Sailing Association. Regional colleges and yacht clubs, such as the Annapolis Yacht Club, Severn Sailing Association, Old Dominion University, Norfolk Yacht & Country Club, the U. S. Naval Academy, Sailing Center Chesapeake, and St. Mary’s College, sponsor these events.

A Board of Directors, comprised of local volunteers, runs the Foundation.
